MACEDONIA REQUESTS CLARIFICATION ON STATEMENTS OF BULGARIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER

Macedonian ambassador to Bulgaria Abdulrahman Aliti requested a meeting with Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin to discuss Kalfin’s statements concerning Macedonia from a July 24 speech.
Kalfin said that Bulgaria’s support for Macedonia’s EU entry could not be unconditional. Macedonia had to demonstrate good neighbourly relations and the lack of aggression towards the Bulgarian nation and history, Kalfin said.
The meeting was cancelled, Novinar newspaper reported.
Macedonian media reported that Kalfin’s statements ‘shocked Macedonian officials’.
At the same time politicians from various Bulgarian parties said they supported the views of the Foreign Minister.
Bulgaria had the right to defend its national interest and could not offer unconditional support, party representatives said.
Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) member Nadezhda Mihailova said that the anti-Bulgarian campaign Skopje was carrying out had to stop.
Macedonia had to change its political attitude, Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) member Bozhidar Dimitrov said.
